Algae Blooms in Old Tampa Bay, Hillsborough Bay

News Image

The warm summer season along with frequent rains have led to significant algae blooms in portions of Tampa Bay. The summer conditions often fuel warm waters preferred by algae; summer rains provide a food source for the algae to grow by flushing nutrients and other pollutants into the Bay.

Nutrients and pollutants can be reduced at the source by residents in this area. Do your part to minimize the conditions for algae growth by sweeping up leaves and grass clippings and minimizing fertilizer use during the summer months.
