Hillsborough County will hold a public meeting to receive public comment and discuss a proposed management and land use plan for the Lake Frances Nature Preserve. The public meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6:30 p.m., at the Martinez Middle School Cafeteria, 5601 Lutz Lake Fern Rd. in Lutz.

Lake Frances Nature Preserve, 11009 Tarpon Springs Road in Odessa, is a 1,600-acre site purchased through the Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP) in December of 2009. The site is proposed to be operated as a nature preserve with low impact recreational activities such as hiking, nature study and horseback riding. Because it is adjoining the Lake Dan Preserve, which is also owned and operated by Hillsborough County, some facilities will be shared between the two areas.

Routine land management functions such as environmental habitat restoration, wildlife survey, invasive plant/pathogen removal, and prescribed burns have been initiated and will continue. Portions of the preserve are also under a cattle grazing lease.
